International Babywearing Week 2015!

Celebrate International Babywearing Week (IBW) with Babywearing International of Greater Houston, October 4-10, 2015! This year’s theme is “Embrace Your World.”

Sunday, October 4, 2015
#EmbraceYourLove is all about that bundle of cuteness that you put into that carrier on our Facebook page — show us those babies! Show us who you wear! Show us what they like to do while wearing and what makes them the happiest.

Monday, October 5, 2015
is about how babywearing helps you every day. Please join us at our first Monday monthly meeting (10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Babies R Us at 18182 Gulf Fwy in Friendswood) for a Babywearing 101 class, where both new and veteran wearers can learn skills and talk about how babywearing can be a useful daily tool.

Tuesday, October 6, 2015
#EmbraceYourAdventure is a throwback to 2014’s IBW theme, “Share the Adventure.” Where have you been while babywearing that was an adventure? This activity will take place on our Facebook page — share a story or pictures of the greatest adventure you’ve been on while wearing.

Wednesday, October 7, 2015
#EmbraceYourWild is about getting out to see what the outdoors has to offer and how babywearing can make that possible. Please join Hike It Baby and BWIGH at 9 a.m. to walk the fitness loop outside the Houston Zoo (6200 Hermann Park Drive, Houston). Afterwards, we’ll have a special session with a zookeeper to learn about animals that “wear” their babies! (Details are posted to the event on our page; zoo admission will be required for those wanting to participate in the chat.)

Thursday, October 8, 2015
#EmbraceYourSelf is about what you do for yourself. What does babywearing do for you? Join us on our Facebook page and tell us what you like, how you care for yourself, and share a photo of how babywearing is a part of that!

Friday, October 9, 2015
#EmbraceYourCommunity is an opportunity to go out and explore what your community has to offer. Please join us for a play date from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Blossoming Mama (122 Vintage Park Blvd, Houston), a local business that supports our babywearing community. Pop on over to Blossoming Mama’s Facebook page and website as there is also a 20% discount code for carriers purchased from now through the end of IBW!

Saturday, October 10, 2015
#EmbraceYourOptions is about exploring all the options available for babywearing. Please stop by our table during the Baby Fair & Diaper Derby at Babies R Us (located at 380 FM 1960 W, Houston) anytime from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. for an introduction to the plethora of carriers that assist us in babywearing, check out some new ones you may not have tried, or see if a carrier you already own can be more functional with a tip or tweak! This event will be come-and-go.

Events are posted to our Facebook page; please join us in celebrating and embracing International Babywearing Week!

IBW 2013: A Week in Review

International Babywearing Week (IBW) was a blast! We had so much going on that I hardly remembered being 38 weeks pregnant. It made me oh-so-appreciative for toddlerwearing, too!

Please visit our Facebook page to see some of the images of us “getting carried away,” which was the theme for 2013.

Our week started in Houston with a gorgeous weather on Monday, beautiful babywearing families, funky blue crepe myrtles (The Blue Trees), and professional photographers Courteney Miller of Once Upon A Lifetime Photography and Alexander Mayhill of Newlife Photos.

Mother and child in a Tula soft structured carrier

We celebrated Model-it Monday at the Blue Trees Project.

Tuesday, we met at Milroy Park in the Heights and practiced babywearing with traditional household fabrics: towels, sarongs or pareos, and tableclothes. It was a beautiful morning with lots of laughs.

On Wednesday, directed by the generous Janaki Mayhill, we experienced intense closeness with our little ones at the tranquil Pilates Place of The Woodlands. Our “babywearing yoga” session started with a lavender oil massage that started with their tiny feet and worked up to their heads. Once little ones were secured into wraps, SSCs, and mei tais, we moved through some gentle stretches and poses that, no matter how gentle, had us all sweaty by the end of class — sweaty yet energized! Courtney Zadik of Cocoa’s Dream Photography, a babywearing mama herself, documented the class.

Three parents carrying their children on their backs in wraps while doing yoga.

Babywearing International of Houston celebrated Work Out Wednesday in October.

For “Tutorial Thursday,” I had everyone over for a dolly sling sewing day. The kids played together while the adults busied themselves at sewing machines making baby carriers for our little “mommies and daddies” to hold their baby dolls, cars, stuffed animals, and any other precious items.

Child carrying a doll in a sling

We love it when our children “wear” their dear toys and dolls.

Friday was another gorgeous day, and we took full advantage of it! For three amazing hours, babywearers enjoyed the splash pad at Sawmill Park in The Woodlands, where we talked parenting, cloth diapers, carseats, pregnancy and birth, and of course babywearing, while the little ones kept busy with the water, play set, and picnic snacks.

We wrapped up IBW with our monthly Saturday meeting, where we discussed airway safety, optimal positioning, and carrier types. We helped fit several caregivers with a compatible carrier; for some, it was ring slings and others, toddler SSCs. We also showed a mother how to use her SSC to carry her child on her back. It was another fun meeting helping each other find (and maintain!) the babywearing love.

How did you celebrate the week? We’d love to hear from you!
