Volunteers Needed!

help wanted BWIGH (1)

BWIGH runs only on volunteer power, and we need your help to keep things going! If you enjoy babywearing and want BWIGH meetings in your area — whether you already have a nearby meeting or want to bring one into your neighborhood — take a look at some of the FAQs below. If you think you’d be a good fit or if you have any questions, please comment below or send us a message on facebook or email!

New Volunteer FAQ:

Q: I don’t know how to use all of the carriers.  Do I have to learn them all in order to volunteer?
A:  I feel like this is one of the main barriers holding people back from volunteering.  The answer is definitely, no.  You do not have to know how to use all of the carriers or even be an expert at ANY of them to be a volunteer.   As we discuss in a few of the questions below, there are plenty of other tasks that can be done, and a lot doesn’t have a lot to do with knowing about carriers.  At meetings volunteers can help with sign ins/ check outs, setting/cleaning up, organization and even helping manage the toddlers and older children running around.  There are also a few organizational tasks behind the scenes that need to be done to help BWIGH run smoothly which also require little knowledge of carriers.
If  you become a volunteer and attend meetings or participate in our online discussions, you will also learn more and more about the carriers in general.  If you have an interest in becoming an educator, we help train our educators and provide resources so you can learn the necessary skills.

Q: What is the time commitment?

A:  To offer monthly meetings, our organization rely on volunteers who can consistently attend meetings. However, to accommodate volunteers who are interested in helping but cannot commit to monthly meetings we require 2 hrs per month which can be met by either assisting a meeting or supporting the organization in other ways such as helping with meeting logistics and paperwork, providing online support in our Facebook chatter groups or assisting BWIGH board members and leaders.

Q: Is there anything I can do behind the scenes, even if I cannot attend meetings?
A:  As mentioned above, there are many things to help with outside of meetings.  A few roles in our organization can be done remotely such as Secretary, Librarian, Treasurer, Outreach coordinator, Social Media Director, International Babywearing Week Coordinator or help with other organizational tasks.  Or if a role is currently filled, there are always tasks that those positions may need an assistant for.

Q: Can I bring my children to events?
A: YES!  We are all caregivers and are very understanding of children and their needs.  Children are always welcome at all meetings, including staff meetings.  We make sure that our locations can always accommodate children.

Q: I get anxious around large groups and do not like to stand in front of a group and speak. Will I HAVE to lead an event?

A: No.  You will only be asked to do whatever you are comfortable with.  You can choose to lead events or not.  You can even organize events, but do not necessarily need to be the one hosting or leading.  If you intend to become a volunteer babywearing educator (VBE), you will be required to teach at least one meeting for your assessment.  However, not everyone is required to become an educator.  We have VBEs, VBEs in training, as well as chapter support volunteers (CSVs) who do not ever intend to become educators but are still a valuable asset to the organization.

Q: How far do I have to drive/travel?
A:  No amount of driving or travel is required if you intend to work “behind the scenes.”  If you plan to attend monthly meetings, you will need to arrange travel to your closest meeting.  You are always welcome to attend other meetings around the area as well.  We try to host our staff meetings in various parts of town, so the same people are not constantly travelling far.  However if you cannot attend a staff meeting for any reason (including travel), depending on event, we try to set up a google hangout so you can still participate via phone or computer.

Q:  Do I have to be on Facebook?
A:  To date, all volunteers have been active on Facebook, if you are not currently on facebook we ask that you create an account for work with BWIGH.  We require volunteers to check in to the staff page once a week so that they are up to date, but do not require daily presence on facebook. Keeping all volunteers on one platform makes it chapter communication easier, however, if this requirement is a problem for you, please let us know and we can discuss alternatives.

About Val Shaikh

Val lives in West Houston's Energy Corridor but will always be a Midwest girl at heart. She has three boys and a wonderful husband. She started wearing her oldest son in 2012 to help soothe him, because he was colicky and never wanted to be put down. She learned about more baby wearing options when pregnant with her second, motived by the knowledge that having two children 19 months apart would be much easier if she could wear her younger son for naps and nursing. Even as her younger son grows into a more independent toddler, Val still finds babywearing an extremely valuable and necessary part of being as a stay-at-home mother. Aside from volunteering as secretary and VBE for BWIGH, Val is a member of several local moms groups, Hike It Baby, and online babywearing communities. She also enjoys the occasional workout, cooking, sewing, and crocheting; she is also a math enthusiast.
